Bayern's Neuer set for return to Schalke

Soccer Betting Lines

09/15/2011 - Gelsenkirchen, Germany (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Manuel Neuer returns to Schalke for a Bundesliga match for the first time Sunday, when Bayern Munich heads to the Veltins-Arena for a key early-season match.

Neuer, Germany's top goalkeeper, left his childhood club for Bayern Munich in the summer, and has anchored the best defense in the country with a string of seven straight shutouts in all competitions, including four league games.

His latest shutout was Wednesday in the Champions League, when he made a pair of saves in a 2-0 win over Villarreal in Spain to lift Bayern to the top of Group A after the first matchday.

"The priority was to come here, keep it tight and win," Neuer admitted. "We're very relieved."

Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes admitted the away win to open Champions League play was vital, and takes some pressure off for the remainder of the stage, and for this weekend's match against Schalke.

"It always gives you a lift," Heynckes said, "when you win away from home in your first Champions League match

"We can all be very satisfied."

Bayern does have concerns after the midweek match, as striker Mario Gomez, who has seven goals in his last two league matches, and defender Daniel van Buyten both left the match with injuries.

Gomez is dealing with a groin strain, while Van Buyten has an Achilles problem that has also troubled him for weeks. "We'll have to wait and see," Heynckes said about the duo's status for this weekend.

With winger Arjen Robben and striker Ivica Olic already sidelined, Bayern will be a little thin if the duo is sidelined, but the club was OK without all four in the second half against Villarreal.

And with Bayern top of the league with four wins from five games, the majority of its team should be in condition to support Neuer against his former club.

Schalke are just three points back of first-place Bayern with three wins from five matches, but Neuer's replacement, 22-year-old Ralf Faehrmann, is doubtful with an ankle injury.

With the change in the back, Schalke could struggle to contain Bayern, even if Gomez - who leads the league with eight goals - misses the match.

Defending champion Borussia Dortmund, which earned a 1-1 draw against Arsenal in the Champions League on Tuesday, will try to take that momentum to Hannover for Sunday's clash between top-four clubs from last season.

But playmaker Mario Gotze and Sebastian Kehl are suspended, and Sven Bender is out with a hip injury.

On Friday, Freiburg will try to rebound from last week's 7-0 loss at Bayern as it hosts Stuttgart.

On Saturday, Bayer Leverkusen hopes to rebound from its Champions League loss at Chelsea when it hosts Cologne, and Werder Bremen - also on 12 points along with Bayern - will try to put pressure on its rival with a win at Nurnberg.

Also Saturday, Hamburg hosts Monchengladbach (the only team to score against Bayern this season), Hoffenheim hosts Wolfsburg, Hertha Berlin hosts Augsburg, and Kaiserslautern hosts Mainz.

Will Ohio State continue to run the table in College Football betting odds?
MySportsbook.com favors Buckeyes, Fighting Irish and Golden Bears in this weekend's big games.

NEW YORK, NY, Sept. 21 - My Sportsbook NCAA football fans: things are beginning to get really interesting on college football's national stage. Following last weekend's "Separation Saturday", which included five teams ranked in the top 15 dropping games, the BCS Championship picture is beginning to take shape - with Ohio State leading the charge. And, according to odds makers at MySportsbook.com, the number-one-ranked Buckeyes will continue their winning ways this weekend.

Revenge will be the name of the game in Columbus this Saturday, as Ohio State looks to even the score following last season's loss to Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions. Although Penn State are listed as 16.5 point underdogs, they are 11-10 all-time versus the Buckeyes. Paterno and the Lions, however, will have to shut down Heisman Trophy favorite Troy Smith who has thrown for 769 yards and seven touchdowns this season.

Speaking of revenge, Notre Dame will be out for some against Michigan State, following last year's 44 - 41 overtime loss to the Spartans in South Bend. The thirteenth-ranked Irish, listed as a 3-point favorite, will also be looking to avenge last Saturday's thrashing from the Michigan Wolverines. The Spartans, meanwhile, have won seven of the last nine match-ups against Notre Dame and are coming off an impressive 38-23 victory over Pittsburgh.

Out west, 22nd-ranked Arizona State will be battling for their first victory over 21st-ranked California since 2000. Although the Golden Bears are listed as 7.5-point favorites, the Sun Devils are 3-0, lead the nation in sacks with 18 and possess the Pac-10's leading passer in sophomore quarterback Rudy Carpenter.
